Notes on method

Period

The war began on 28 February 2026 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran. A ceasefire took effect on 8 April; fighting resumed in July and again at the end of August. There is no formal ceasefire. Since early September no strikes on Iranian territory have been reported, and the United States has blockaded Iranian ports since July (status on 13 October 2026).

Iranian figures

Iran's Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs gave the official total of 3,468 deaths up to 8 April, split into 1,460 civilians and 2,008 military personnel. For the later rounds the Ministry of Health has reported separate figures, but no new running total. This page does not add those figures up.

Independent counts

HRANA and Hengaw, two human rights organisations based outside Iran, document deaths in Iran from their own sources. Their totals and their split between civilians and military differ strongly. They are shown as reported, not combined.

Comparability

The figures per side come from different bodies and periods, and the US figure includes deaths from accidents and illness. They are shown side by side and not added up.

Order and design

The panels appear in the alphabetical order of the language shown and share the same structure, typography and colours.
